Welcome to April at Play Resource! The shop is embracing the new season with vibrant fun displays of stock and ideas focused on the themes How Does Your Garden Grow, Sunshine & Showers and Wildlife & Nature to welcome the Spring as it sweeps in, adverse weather conditions and all….!!

We have a packed calendar of arts events. To pick up ideas and training for working with children and young people this summer book a place now for one of the summer workshops at the Ideas & Inspiration Day on 8 May, only £5 per session. Browse the latest Calendar of Events to see the highlights from April to August. Plus don’t miss the Puppet Making Master Classes running in partnership with the Beat Initiative.

Art & Play Shop

Spring has sprung but we can probably expect a few rainy days, so this month the shop team has been busy creating a range of ideas for activities to keep groups busy focusing on the themes How Does Your Garden Grow, Sunshine & Showers and Wildlife & Nature.

Welcome the new season as it sweeps in, adverse weather conditions and all, with 10 new Quick Ideas from the shop including: Paperplate Frog, Lollystick Birdhouse, Daffodil Windmill, Scrap Bird Feeder. Take inspiration for group activities from these ideas! We have a fantastic range of products just browse the Seasonal Price List to plan your spring shopping lists.

Use the shop as a source of creativity with our experienced friendly staff on hand to answer queries or give advice about products. Check out the samples dotted around the shop or search our new online library of Quick Ideas for more suggestions.

Tempted to check out our full range of products…? Then visit the new website. It is easy to see at a glance a colourful overview of all that is on offer in the shop, and remember that the shop is not-for-profit, which enables us to pass on real savings on products to our members, so our prices tend to be between 10% to 50% cheaper than most retailers.

Creative Paths Arts Programme

The popular summer arts training workshops are back! Pick up ideas for working with children and young people at the Ideas & Inspiration Day on Saturday 8 May from 10am to 3.30pm at Play Resource. The special super value price of only £5 per workshop makes summer ideas and training even more affordable this year!

Choice of workshops for the day includes: face painting, Quick Things to Do, puppets, viking huts, carnival masks, t-shirt design, kites & moving toys, and clay modelling! For full details download the workshop schedule and booking form. Cost £5 per workshop, book 3 get 4th session free, and plus access to free drop in arts & craft demos throughout the day. The Beat Carnival has joined with the Play Resource to offer exciting Puppet Making Master Classes in April and May. These sessions are suited to community and youth leaders working with groups to participate in Belfast City Carnival and in their own local festivals. Membership News

Exciting news as Play Resource has been short-listed in the Best Social Economy category of the Belfast Business Awards 2010. We will find out whether we are the winners at the Awards Ceremony on Thursday 29 April. Hopefully next month we might be back with some good news!!

The Ideas Gallery continues to exhibit the Ancient Civilizations inspired display featuring scrap materials with Mayan, Egyptian, Celtic, Roman, Native American and Aboriginal influences, and the Going Slow photography exhibition by artist Jim Russell exploring the beauty and diversity of the natural world around us. Use them to collect Ideas & Inspiration for your own art projects.

The deadline of the Our World Art Competition has brought in some fantastic entries. Everyone will get the opportunity to see a selection of the entries and winners as the exhibition is unveiled once the judging and prize giving has taken place later this month, so watch this space to see who picks up a prize!

Does your organisation work in youth arts? Then come along to Making Space 2010, an annual professional forum for youth arts which is part of the Belfast Children’s Festival, curated and co-ordinated by Young at Art in partnership with the University of Ulster. The forum will bring together international practitioners, local artists, policy makers, arts organisations, academics and students to share current practices, issues and concerns in the arts for children.

This year’s programme offers six options, comprising seminars, performances and discussions with plenty of options to suit the requirements and interests of various organisations and individuals. Wheelworks is offering an innovative Dealing with Difference training programme focused on Diversity Awareness aimed at youth and community arts workers. It will look at issues of racism, disability and homophobia in terms of seeking to find ways to include those who are marginalized and addressing the issues that cause exclusion. Training sessions run across three one-day workshops during April and May.
